I understand you are trying to upgrade to macOS Catalina and you are getting a specific error message - 'The request timed out. An error occurred while installing the selected updates.'
Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to address this issue:
- If you have any firewall or third-party security software installed on your Mac, please disable them and try again.
- Try booting your computer in safe mode - Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac
- Recycle the power to your modem/router:
- Shut down your Mac
- Unplug the power cord connected to the back of your router (or modem/router if it is a combo unit).
- Unplug the power cord connected to the back of your modem.
- Wait one minute, then plug the power to the modem first (unless it is a combo unit).
- Wait for the status lights to indicate the connection to the network has been made.
- Then plug the power back into the router.
- Wait for the status lights to indicate the connection to the network has been made.
- Turn on your iPhone and tap Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Toggle the Wi-Fi switch off, and then back on.
- If you have more than one network (ie. a 2.4 Ghz and a 5 Ghz), test each to determine which setting gives you the best connection.
Note: You may need to update the firmware on your router or check with your ISP provider if you continue to have issues downloading from the internet.
If the issue persists, try downloading at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider near you.
